Rustic to resort: choosing a campground beyond the star rating

A great campsite isn't always the place with the most amenities. It's the place that fits your rig, your people, your schedule and your expectations.

1. Decide how you want the stay to feel

A rustic site can offer quiet and scenery at the expense of hookups, showers and nearby shopping. A resort-style campground can add pools, paved access, activities and Wi-Fi, while offering less solitude. A comfortable middle ground may have electric service, flush toilets and a dump station without resort-style entertainment.

2. Check the campsite, not just the campground

Different sites in the same park can have very different utilities and usable lengths. Verify your RV's full travel length, height, tow vehicle and trailer setup, slide-out clearance and whether you need a pull-through site. Some parks list a general RV maximum that does not apply to every site.

3. Make a specific utility checklist

Look separately for shore power amperage, water hookups, sewer hookups, dump station access, potable water and bathrooms. “Electric available” does not mean full hookups. Wi-Fi availability does not ensure a usable connection for remote work.

4. Read recent, detailed reviews—carefully

A star score alone doesn't explain whether a campground is quiet, clean, level, accessible or suitable for children. Look for photos and descriptions from guests with similar RVs and travel needs. Pay attention to management responses and recurring issues rather than one dramatic review.

5. Confirm seasonal operations and current rules

Some public campgrounds close in fall or limit facilities because of weather, maintenance, drought or local restrictions. Check official operator information before driving. Confirm pet restrictions, generator hours, fire rules, check-in time, cancellation policies and whether advance reservations are required.

6. Leave room for the unexpected

Have a backup stop, check road conditions and consider the driving time between the campground and fuel, groceries or medical services. When traveling with children or pets, a few practical comforts can matter more than a long amenity list.

MRR takeaway: Instead of asking “Is this a five-star campground?” ask “Is this a five-star campground for us?”
